Profanity, War, Killing- Oh My!

Jasmine Jordan (summarizer/ blog master):

So far in the novel it is evident that there is a boastful amount of profound language and humor when the soliders reference to the war and its hostile environment. Why do the soldiers tell jokes about the killing that occurs in the War and why do they use profanity to describe it?

  1. I think that when people are trained to do nothing but stay alive and kill, they don't change, but express emotion that would not be appropriate anywhere else. It seems like men are more prone to this behavior since we have different drive and instinct than women. (Men don't like to seem weak or not tough around other men)

  2. I agree with Josh. The chapter where he shoots destroys the water buffalo shows how much war can do to a person. When you witness unexplainable events it can make you do something even more unexplainable. I also believe that if a person is around so much violence their minds adjust and grow used to it. Some parts of the book seem like common war stories, but some parts of war are bizarre and can haunt a person for ever.
